14 hours after our wedding, my husband threw a filthy, grease-soaked rag in my face in front of his 22 relatives.

Part 1 — The Brunch

It is a strange thing to watch someone peel off their mask.

It happened fourteen hours after I had promised him forever.

At the post-wedding brunch, his mother Brenda pivoted as I walked past and knocked a crystal bowl of oily roasted vegetable drippings onto my white heels.

She said: oh look what you made me do, Chloe.

The room of thirty relatives went silent.

Derek grabbed a filthy dish towel from the buffet and threw it directly into my face.

He said: get on your knees and clean it up. From now on this is your job. Don’t think you’re going to be a freeloader in my house.

My brain scrambled to rationalize.
