Part 2: The Call From Our Mother
Kayla ran upstairs and slammed the guest room door so hard a picture frame fell off the hallway wall.
Andrew picked it up and hung it back on its nail. Then he refilled his coffee and sat back down.
I sat across from him. My hands were shaking a little.
I asked him when he had done all of this.
He said he had spent Friday afternoon calling around. The studio belonged to Mr. Alvarez, who owned the hardware store. Six hundred dollars for the month, furnished, utilities included.
He paid it from his own savings.
I didn’t want to throw her out on the street, he said. I just didn’t want her in our kitchen in a towel anymore.
I laughed for the first time in a week. Then I cried a little. He handed me a napkin.
Forty minutes later, my phone rang. It was my mother, calling from Tucson.
I already knew what had happened. Kayla had called her.
I put it on speaker so Andrew could hear.
Mom didn’t say hello. She asked me how I could throw my baby sister out of my house when she had nowhere to go.
I told her Kayla had somewhere to go. A furnished apartment, paid for, five minutes from our house.
Mom said that wasn’t the point. She said Kayla had just had her heart broken. She said I was being cold.
She’s fragile, Amanda, Mom said. You’ve always known that.
Then Kayla’s voice came through the line. She was on speaker too, from upstairs.
She said I was jealous. She said I had always been jealous of her. She said Andrew was controlling and I couldn’t even see it.
I closed my eyes and took a slow breath.
I asked her four times to wear a robe, I said. That’s all I asked. A robe.
Mom said it was just a towel. She said I was making a mountain out of nothing.
Then it shouldn’t be hard to stop, I said.
Neither of them had an answer to that.
I kept my voice gentle and steady.
The studio is paid for. The movers come Wednesday at nine. I’ll help her pack if she wants me to.
And I love you both, I said. That hasn’t changed.
Mom said she was very disappointed in me. She hung up.
Upstairs, I heard Kayla crying through the guest room door.
I sat at the kitchen table for a long time after that. I felt like the worst sister in the world.
Andrew watched me for a moment. Then he reached across the table and turned his phone over.
There’s something else you should know, he said quietly. I didn’t want to tell you until I was sure.
On Friday, I called Tyler.
Tyler was Kayla’s ex. The one who had asked her to move out.
Andrew said Tyler had been reluctant to talk at first. But eventually, he told him why the relationship had really ended.
Andrew looked at me with an expression I couldn’t read.
Amanda, he said, this wasn’t the first time she’s run one of her tests.
Part 3: The Pattern I Never Wanted to See
Andrew told me everything Tyler had said.
For six years, Kayla had tested him. She checked his phone while he slept. She created fake social media accounts and messaged him to see if he would respond.
Twice, she flirted openly with his best friend at parties, then told Tyler it was to see if he would get jealous enough to prove he loved her.
Last spring, she did it with his brother.
That was the day Tyler finally asked her to leave.
He told Andrew he still cared about her. He said he just couldn’t live inside an exam he was never allowed to pass.
I sat very still while Andrew talked.
Then I got up and went to the drawer where I keep my old checkbook registers. I’ve kept every one since college.
I sat on the living room floor and started turning pages.
When Kayla was twenty-two, I paid off a credit card she had maxed out. Forty-two hundred dollars. She promised to pay me back. She never did.
When she was twenty-five, I co-signed a car loan for her. She stopped making payments after eight months. I finished paying it off myself.
Two years ago, I lent her sixteen hundred dollars for dental work. She posted pictures from a beach in Cancun the following month.
This month alone, I had spent six hundred dollars on groceries for her. I had put three hundred miles on my car driving her to interviews.
But the money wasn’t what made my chest ache.
It was the memory that surfaced while I sat on that floor.
When I was seventeen, I brought a boy named Chris home for dinner. Kayla was fifteen. She sat next to him all night, laughing at everything he said and touching his arm.
Afterward, she told me she was just checking if he was a good one.
He stopped calling me two weeks later.
I had forgotten that. Or maybe I had made myself forget it.
Mom always told me Kayla was the baby. That she was sensitive. That our father leaving hit her harder because she was younger.
So I was supposed to understand. I was supposed to make room.
I had been making room for thirty years.
I sat there until the light through the window went orange. Andrew came in and sat down beside me without a word.
I told him I felt guilty. I told him I felt like I was abandoning her.
He shook his head.
You’re not abandoning her, he said. You’re finally letting her stand on her own feet. That’s different.
On Tuesday afternoon, I was folding laundry in the living room when I heard a car pull into our driveway.
I looked out the window. A taxi was idling at the curb.
My mother was climbing out of the back seat with a rolling suitcase.
She had flown in from Tucson without telling anyone.
And Kayla was already standing on the front porch, waiting to let her in.
Part 4: The Kitchen Table Conversation
Mom walked into my house like it was hers.
She hugged Kayla for a long time in the entryway. Then she turned to me with her arms crossed.
She said she had come to sort this out. She said we were a family, and families don’t evict each other.
I made coffee. I set out a plate of cookies. I asked everyone to sit at the kitchen table.
Andrew sat beside me. He didn’t say a word. He told me later he wanted me to know he was there, but that this conversation belonged to me.
Mom started by saying she had raised both her daughters to take care of each other.
Then she said I had always been jealous of Kayla. Ever since we were girls. Kayla was the pretty one. The fun one. The one people noticed.
I felt that one land. It was meant to.
Kayla sat across from me with red eyes. She said she had nowhere else to turn. She said she had just lost the love of her life and now she was losing her sister too.
Then Mom leaned forward. Her voice softened.
Amanda, she said, your father left this family. Please don’t be like him.
The kitchen went very quiet.
I looked down at my hands for a long moment. Then I looked up at my mother.
Mom, I said quietly, I’m not leaving anyone. I’m the one who opened the door.
I turned to my sister.
Kayla, I love you. I have always loved you. I have paid your bills, co-signed your loans, and driven you everywhere you ever needed to go.
She started to speak. I kept going, gently.
But I asked you for one simple thing in my own home. And you told me it was a test.
I talked to Tyler, I said. Andrew did, actually. I know about his brother. I know about the fake accounts.
Kayla’s face went white. Mom turned to look at her.
You weren’t testing Andrew, I said. You’ve been testing everyone who ever loved you. Waiting for them to fail. So you could prove you were right to be afraid.
Kayla’s lip started to tremble.
Mom said that wasn’t fair. She said Kayla had been through so much.
I nodded. I know she has, Mom. So have I. That’s not a reason to hurt people. It’s a reason to get help.
I told them the studio was still paid for. The movers were still coming at nine.
I told Mom she was welcome to stay in the guest room after Kayla moved, for as long as she liked.
Mom stood up. She said if this was how I was going to be, maybe she wouldn’t come for Thanksgiving.
That’s your choice, I told her. You’ll always have a seat at my table.
She looked at me like she had never seen me before.
That night, the house was silent. Nobody came down for dinner.
On Wednesday morning, I came downstairs at seven to make coffee.
Kayla was already sitting at the kitchen table.
She was fully dressed. Jeans, a sweater, and her hair pulled back.
Her suitcases were packed and standing by the front door.
And she was holding a folded piece of paper out toward me.
Part 5: The Robe in the Guest Room
It was a letter. One page, in Kayla’s slanted handwriting.
She had written it at three in the morning.
She wrote that she didn’t know how to say it out loud, so she was writing it instead.
She wrote about the day our father left. She was seven. She remembered him kissing her forehead and saying he would be right back.
She wrote that ever since, she had been waiting for everyone else to leave too.
I thought if I tested people hard enough, she wrote, I would find out who was going to leave before they could surprise me.
At the bottom, she had written three sentences.
I’m sorry, Amanda. Andrew never once looked at me. I think that’s what scared me most.
I set the letter down and hugged my sister. She cried into my shoulder like she was seven years old again.
The movers came at nine. I rode with her to the studio above the hardware store and helped her unpack.
Mr. Alvarez brought up a small potted fern and a welcome card. Kayla cried again.
Mom flew back to Tucson on Friday. She didn’t say much at the airport. But when she hugged me goodbye, she held on a little longer than usual.
She called me the following Sunday. She said she had been thinking. She said maybe she had asked me to make room for my sister for too many years.
I don’t know how to fix that, she said.
I told her she just had.
Kayla found a job two weeks later, at a bakery on the corner of Main and Fifth. She starts at four in the morning and comes home smelling like cinnamon.
When the first month’s lease ended, she paid the second month herself. Then the third.
She started seeing a counselor on Thursday evenings. She told me about it on her own. I never asked.
In January, she called Tyler. She apologized to him properly. He told her he hoped she found what she was looking for.
She said she thought she might be finding it.
Kayla and I have dinner together every Tuesday now. Sometimes at her little studio, sometimes at our house.
The first time she came back over for dinner, she walked into our kitchen and stopped.
Andrew was sitting at the table with his coffee, the way he always does.
Kayla took a breath, walked over to him, and held out her hand.
I owe you an apology, she said. For everything.
Andrew shook her hand. Then he pulled out a chair for her.
You passed, he said with a small smile.
She laughed. A real laugh, the first one I’d heard from her in a long time.
At Christmas, she handed me a soft package wrapped in silver paper.
Inside was a thick white bathrobe, the kind they have in nice hotels. Folded on top was a small card.
For the guest room, it said. For the next person who needs a place to land.
I hung it on the back of the guest room door that same night.
It’s still there. And every time I pass it, I think about the Sunday my husband set down his coffee instead of walking away.
Sometimes, the kindest thing you can do for someone you love is to stop giving them room to hurt you.
And then leave the door open for the day they’re ready to come back.
